Microsoft Zune: Why it will fail...

zunelogo.jpg
Microsoft has confirmed that it's new portable music player, the Zune, will launch sometime this year.

My prediction is this... it will fail to dent the dominance of the iconic iPod. Why? Because it's from Microsoft, and who wants to walk around with a 'Microsoft' round their neck?

They can brand the product as sweetly as they like, but they can't escape from people's perceptions of the corporate brand.

Guinness blog: Giving you the inside track...

harp.gif As a new 'blogger' myself I thought I'd mention another brand blog.

The Guinness Marketing Team in the UK have their own blog (some great pics of the World Cup on there at the moment). You can also see the latest advertising, and the storyboards that the advertising was created from, and more news and views giving you the inside track on Guinness.

It looks like they're having fun with it... but will consumers engage? Take a look at the Guinness Blog. (Be sure to specify that you are from England, Scotland or Wales to gain access.)

Nokia: The next story in video?

Does Nokia make phones any more? They certainly don't market them as phones (way too boring). Their new N93 'device' is 'The next story in video' - and they are doing a good job of creating an engaging brand experience.

In Asia they're doing this together with the Discovery Channel and their Mobile FilmMakers Awards 2006. Check out the site at www.mobifilms.net.

Reminds me of the short film series that BMW made years ago... but now we can all be budding film directors.

1 billion sms every day in China

According to the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (MII) the daily average number of sms in China has reached 1,098,000,000 - over a billion sms every day.

Phew...

And Chinese internet users also spend longer online than their American counterparts. There may be plenty of handwringing in the West about censorship of the net in China, but Chinese people are embracing the internet as their most open and participative source of information and entertainment.

Google Video... Ad Awards?

Google Video has just launched in the UK and 7 other countries... hot on the heels of YouTube. The difference is Google has deals to distribute content, including: Disney, Barcelona FC, the Cousteau Society, etc.

How long before media planning has to take account of online viewing? And how long before we have Ad Awards based on Google Video rankings? (People seeking out your ads, what better accolade?)

Here are two of my favorite ads doing well on YouTube...

One you probably have seen:
John West Salmon... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_VlVckrUgY

And one you might not have seen:
