Creative Thinking

How we think

Do you ever think about how you think? If this seems like a strange question, then think again…

There are many different ways to think. In his book, A Whack on the Side of the Head, Roger von Oech identifies dozens of different ways of thinking. Here are just some of them:

  Logical thinking
Conceptual thinking
Analytical thinking
Speculative thinking
'Right-brain' thinking
Critical thinking
Foolish thinking
Convergent thinking
Reflective thinking
Visual thinking
Symbolic thinking
Propositional thinking
Metaphorical thinking
Mythical thinking
Poetic thinking
Divergent thinking
Surreal thinking
Fantasy thinking

Some types of thinking are more rational and focused. Some types of thinking are more creative and expansive (Roger von Oech calls this 'hard' and 'soft' thinking). Both can be valuable when used at the right times and in the right way. (For more examples, take a look at our articles on Brainstorming and
Six Thinking Hats
).

So next time you're thinking, take some time to think about HOW you're thinking. It may lead you to try a new and more productive approach.

Ask yourself:

Do I make best use of different ways of thinking, to maximize my productivity?
